# Alfa Romeo extends deal with Sauber until 2021

Alfa Romeo has agreed a one-year extension with Sauber to continue its arrangement as naming rights holder for another season.

The Italian manufacturer initially joined forces with Sauber in 2018 as its title sponsor, before taking full control of the team the following year.

On Thursday, it was officially confirmed the partnership would run until the end of 2021, prior to the major technical regulations arriving in 2022.

Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur is confident extending the relationship between the two parties will bring results in the long-term.

“The extension of our relationship with Alfa Romeo is a true statement of intent from both parties,” Vassuer said.

“In Sauber, Alfa Romeo found a committed, performance-driven partner to which they could entrust their brand. We are honoured to carry the heritage and past success of Alfa Romeo in our name.

“Both parties always intended for this relationship to bear fruit in the long term. We have laid some solid foundations in the last three seasons and we aim to reap the rewards of this work in 2021 and beyond.”

Mike Manley, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, added: “Racing and performance are at the core of Alfa Romeo’s DNA.

“The brand was practically born on a racetrack and today we continue to compete at the most technologically advanced level of motorsport.

“The partnership with Sauber Group also allows our customers to benefit from exclusive racing know-how, as it is the case of the all-new Giulia GTA and GTAm, which incorporate Sauber Engineering’s technical input particularly as it relates to advanced aerodynamics.”

Alfa is yet to confirm its driver line-up for next year, but current incumbents Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi are expected to remain team-mates for a third season.

The Swiss-based outfit has only scored five points in 2020, compared to the 57 points it accumulated last year, as it sits eighth in the constructors’ standings.

This weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will see Alfa Romeo run a special one-off livery to commemorate its 110th anniversary,

The C39 will feature an Italian flag on the engine cover and rear wing endplates, and carry a “Welcome back Imola” message.
