Ferrari’s 2019 Formula 1 car has been unveiled with the SF90 breaking cover in an online launch.

The Maranello outfit is pinning hopes on its latest design ending a 12-year wait for a drivers’ championship after finishing runner-up two years on the trot.

A succession of errors from lead driver Sebastian Vettel and the team cost them at crucial points in the season-long duel for the title with Mercedes in 2018.

2019 also marks a new era for Ferrari following an overhaul in management over the winter as Mattia Binotto succeeds Maurizio Arrivabene as team boss this season.

“This year is an important one for we celebrate our 90th anniversary as the Scuderia Ferrari was born in Modena in 1929,” said CEO Louis Camilleri.

“It’s an important milestone as we continue to be inspired and guided by the vision of our founder Enzo Ferrari.

“We fully understand as a team we carry the hopes, expectation and pride of an entire nation and millions of fans across the world.

“It’s a responsibility we gladly accept. Last season was our best in the last 10 years, yet we fell short of our objectives.

“Such a setback is never easy to swallow, but I assure you we look ahead with strong commitment and determination.”

Four-time champion Vettel is targeting a first drivers’ title with Ferrari in his fifth year at the Scuderia, with the German being joined by the highly-rated Charles Leclerc, who impressed greatly in his rookie campaign for Sauber.

The SF90 yields a tweaked matte red livery, with variations of black on this year’s colour scheme.

The car is understood to be in a race against time to be debuted in a shakedown run ahead of pre-season testing next week in Barcelona.

On his role as Ferrari’s team principal, Binotto said: “It’s simply looking ahead. I don’t think there is much to think about.

“Just do what you need to do and try to do it your best.”
