Championship contenders Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton finished first and second on the timesheet, separated by 0.081 seconds, in FP3 ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Vettel set a 1m20.509s benchmark in his Ferrari and while Hamilton was able to edge closer to top spot as his final qualifying simulation run progressed, he remained in second place.
Hamilton’s fastest lap was aided by a distant tow from Valtteri Bottas in the final sector. He was also the fastest of all through the short first sector.
The Brit continued to explore track limits at the exit of the Della Roggia chicane throughout the session, kicking up gravel with his right-side tyres on multiple occasions.
Despite his continued speed – after having topped Friday’s FP2 timesheet – Vettel’s FP3 was not perfect.
On an early run, he locked up his left front on a damp patch of track in the braking zone for Turn 1 and ventured onto the escape road. His first run was 0.606s adrift of his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen as a result of the vibrations.
Vettel also reported after his timesheet-topping qualifying simulation run that there was time available in the final sector, after having run wide at the Parabolica.
Raikkonen ended the session third after having set the pace early on.
Bottas was 0.603s adrift in fourth place. He appeared to struggle under braking, making a mistake at Turn 1 late in the session and bouncing across the sausage kerbs.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rounded out the top five, while his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo – who heads into qualifying with grid penalties after having installed an upgraded out of allocation power unit – was eighth having focussed mainly on long-run performance.
The Red Bull’s were split by Haas’s Kevin Magnussen in sixth and Force India’s Esteban Ocon in seventh.
Charles Leclerc continued to impress in the Sauber despite the team’s DRS woes which hindered Friday running. He ended up ninth on the timesheet, jumping ahead of Romain Grosjean late on.
Grosjean was only able to record one representative lap in the session’s closing stages, as he was wrong-footed by traffic.
Force India’s Sergio Perez had traded places with team-mate Ocon in seventh and eighth early on but ended up in 11th. A trip across the Turn 2 sausage kerbs damaged his car to cause understeer in the latter stages.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne finished 17th and 18th respectively. The two practised a tow during the final laps in FP3, with Vandoorne recording two personal best sectors when aided by Alonso, to finish less than a tenth behind his team-mate.
