DS Virgin Racing team principal steps down

Alex Tai has stepped down from his role as DS Virgin Racing’s team principal and CEO in Formula E.

Having held the position since the inaugural 2014/15 FE season, this weekend’s race in Zurich will be the first in which DS Virgin has not been led by Tai.

In a statement released by the team, his departure is to allow him the focus on “other business activities,” although he will remain as an advisor to the team until the end of the season.

“A new team principal will be announced before the start of season five [in December],” read the statement.

“In the meantime, Sylvain Filippi, has been promoted to Chief Operations Officer, and will oversee both the racing activities and day-to-day operations of the business.

“DS Virgin Racing would like to thank Alex as one of the founders of the team for his work in guiding it through four seasons culminating in the many track successes we have achieved in that time.

“We wish him well with his future endeavours.”

Tai has a long association with Virgin. He was briefly named as team principal of the Virgin Racing Formula 1 team in December 2009.

He was replaced less than a month later by John Booth, who led the team into its debut season in F1.

Tai stayed within the company, later returning to motorsport with DS Virgin in FE.

With three races remaining this season, the outfit is currently third in the teams’ standings. The team has claimed two race victories, with Sam Bird earning wins at the season-opener in Hong Kong and in Rome.
