# Former Ferrari designer signs as Sauber technical director

Former Ferrari chief designer Simone Resta has been signed by Sauber to become the Formula 1 team’s new technical director.

Having been Ferrari’s chief designer since 2014, Resta has had a significant influence on recent grand prix-winning machinery.

He replaces Jorg Zander at Sauber, whose departure from the role of technical director was announced at the start of the month.

Resta will begin working in the role from July 1. He will report directly to Sauber team principal and CEO Frederic Vasseur.

“Simone Resta has the best profile to take on the role of Technical Director,” Vasseur said.

“His arrival at Sauber marks a significant step ahead of a long term project that aims at strengthening the Sauber team in order to achieve ambitious results.”

Resta’s appointment follows April’s announcement that former Toyota, Ferrari and Audi aerodynamicist Jan Monchaux had joined the team as head of aerodynamics.

Following a new design philosophy in 2018, Sauber has had its best start to a season since ’15 with 11 points scored in the first six races.

This is also the first year of an enhanced partnership with Ferrari. Alfa Romeo is Sauber’s title sponsor in 2018. The team also benefits from current specification Ferrari power units and provides a race seat to Ferrari junior driver Charles Leclerc.
