Driver Ratings: 2018 Monaco Grand Prix

The 2018 Monaco Grand Prix did not feature an abundance of thrilling wheel-to-wheel moments. As so often is the case, Formula 1 delivered high-speed chess at the Principality.

Bizarrely it was a race in which the midfield was faster than the leaders as Daniel Ricciardo – the weekend’s imperious frontrunner – was forced to nurse his car from when power unit dramas surfaced on lap 18 until the chequered flag on lap 78.

Those behind Ricciardo were facing problems of their own. Cooler than expected track temperatures meant that teams entered the race without a full understanding of how the tyres would perform. Ferrari and Mercedes subsequently struggled.

Ricciardo’s first Monaco GP victory was one to savour – a triumph against adversity. Sebastian Vettel finished second to close in on Lewis Hamilton at the at the top of the drivers’ standings. Another costly mistake from Max Verstappen served to derail his weekend emphatically.
