Lewis Hamilton topped the times in second practice ahead of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen second and third.
Hamilton held top spot for the majority of the session, after having posted a 1m18.259s on the soft tyre during the early runs.
When switching to the supersoft tyre, Hamilton was unable to improve his time after going wide at Turn 7. This was ultimately a trend in the session, with several drivers failing to improve during the qualifying simulation runs.
Daniel Ricciardo was another driver who was faster on the soft tyre. He ended the session 0.133s behind Hamilton’s benchmark, but with a session best split time in sector three over 0.2s quicker than the next best.
His Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen was third after his first run on the supersoft tyres was another to be compromised by running wide at Turn 7. He finished ahead of Sebastian Vettel who was fourth.
FP1 pacesetter Valtteri Bottas was fifth, while Kimi Raikkonen ended up sixth. His session was derailed at mid-distance. First sliding into the Turn 4 gravel trap, Raikkonen then suffered a power unit failure one lap later and coasted back to the pitlane.
Raikkonen was still using his first power unit of the season and, therefore, is not facing the prospect of grid penalties for this weekend.
Romain Grosjean recovered from beaching his Haas in the Turn 7 gravel trap in the opening minutes of the session to eventually finish seventh. Team-mate Kevin Magnussen was eighth as Haas locked-out the best of the rest positions.
Stoffel Vandoorne, who missed the opening 20 minutes of running with a set-up change, ended the afternoon ninth. Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10. His was another session to end early after he left the garage without his left front wheel correctly attached following a practice pitstop.
Williams was at the foot of the times for the second consecutive session, with Lance Stroll leading Sergey Sirotkin.
