# Miami approves F1 Grand Prix proposals

Miami governing bodies have approved proposals to host Formula 1 races on the city streets, paving the way for a race to be held in October 2019.

Meetings of the Miami Commissioners and the city’s Economic Development committee heard plans for the race on Thursday, unanimously voting in favour of the proposals and approving the event to be held next year.

The verdict follows last week’s announcement of advanced talks being conducted between F1 owners Liberty Media and Miami council officials. A proposed circuit layout was also published.

Initial government approval now means that Liberty will enter into discussions to finalise the details of the deal. It is anticipated that the race will be added to the calendar on a 10-year deal.

“With the unanimous votes at both the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee, we are very pleased to have received preliminary approval towards bringing an F1 Grand Prix to Miami,” said Sean Bratches, F1’s head of commercial operations.

“We recognise that this is only the start of the process and we will immediately get to work with the various community stakeholders, the City of Miami, the Port of Miami, Bayfront Park Management Trust and others, in order to reach a final agreement.

“F1 in Miami represents a fantastic opportunity to bring the greatest racing spectacle on the planet to one of the world’s most iconic cities, and we are delighted that the journey is underway.”

Miami would become the second US destination on the F1 calendar, with the Circuit of the Americas in Texas currently contracted to host its race until 2022.

It is not anticipated that the addition of Miami to the schedule would trigger a current venue to be dropped from next year’s calendar.

According to the proposed layout, the track would pass the American Airlines Arena used by Basketball team Miami Heat, as well as utilising both sides of the bridge over Port Boulevard in a high-speed section likened to Shoreline Drive at Long Beach.
