Lopez set for FE return as Jani splits with Dragon

Jose Maria Lopez is set to return to Formula E after Neel Jani split with Dragon Racing after just one weekend.

Lopez made his debut with Virgin Racing last year but was axed in favour of Alex Lynn after just one season, which included two podiums.

The opportunity to return to FE arose when Jani and Dragon decided to part company after a nightmare start to the season.

Jani was lapped and finished down in 18th place in both races. His team-mate Jerome d’Ambrosio also failed to score. This left Dragon as the only team to walk away from Hong Kong empty-handed.

The team split with its technical partner Faraday Future prior to the season opener.

It was allegedly going to receive Porsche backing with Jani, a Porsche LMP1 driver, and multiple engineers on board from the German manufacturer, however, this deal fell through.

Following Porsche’s LMP1 exit, Jani will race with privateers Rebellion in WEC’s ‘super-season’ which begins at Spa in May.

Lopez is also expected to remain in LMP1 with sole manufacturers Toyota.

It’s unknown whether Lopez will contest next weekend’s Marrakesh FE round as a one-off or the first of a full-time seat.
