# Sofuoglu out for remainder of Supersport season

Five-time World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu will miss the remainder of the 2017 season as doctors set a 12–week recovery period for a hip injury sustained in a crash at Magny–Cours.

The Puccetti Kawasaki rider was setting the timing screens ablaze on his final lap in Saturday’s Supersport Superpole session for the 10th round of the season in France when he crashed exiting the 180 corner.

Sofuoglu was flicked from his ZX–6R and hit the ground heavily, while his bike came to a rest in the middle of the circuit, forcing the session to be red-flagged.

The Turkish rider was taken to the circuit’s medical centre before being transfered to Nevers Hospital, where he was diagnosed with three fractures to his hip.

Sofuoglu subsequently flew back home to Turkey to undergo surgery, after which doctors gave the Turk an estimated recovery time of 12 weeks, ruling him out of the final rounds at Jerez and in Qatar.

Sofuoglu took the lead of the championship for the first time this season after taking his fifth win of 2017 in Portugal having missed the opening two rounds with injury and scoring no points on his comeback at Aragon due to a collision.

Closest championship rival Lucas Mahias – who is in his first full season in the Supersport World Championship – trailed Sofuoglu by four points ahead of the French round.

Despite almost crashing on the opening lap and plummeting from 11th to 19th at the start of the 19–lap race, Mahias was able to take the chequered flag in fourth spot to go nine points clear at the top of the standings.

With Sofuoglu now unable to fight for a sixth world title, Mahias‘ nearest challenger is now Kallio Racing’s Sheridan Morais, who sits 32 points adrift in third in the championship.
