Injured Rossi tests road bike at Misano, will decide on Aragon participation by Wednesday

Valentino Rossi has completed a brief test of a Yamaha road bike at Misano just 18 days after breaking his right leg, with the Italian set to decide on his participation in the Aragon MotoGP round by Wednesday.

Rossi sustained a displaced fracture of the tibia and fibula of his right leg in an incident while out training on his enduro bike in Italy a week prior to the San Marino Grand Prix.

After undergoing a successful operation on the leg – which was the same one he broke in 2010 during practice for the Italian Grand Prix – a recovery time of at least 30-40 days was set.

This forced him to miss the race at Misano, but the prospect of the Italian returning to action at Aragon was not ruled out, though Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis said it would only be if he could battle for the top five.

Ahead of this weekend’s Aragon Grand Prix, media reports from Italy suggested Rossi was to assess his fitness on a Yamaha R1 road bike at Misano on Tuesday with the view to potentially contest the first free practice session of the Aragon round on Friday.

However, the Italian brought the test forward a day due to a threat of rain on Tuesday. Bad weather halted Rossi from doing many laps, however, and the test proved inconclusive in determining his physical condition.

Yamaha confirmed the test took place, while Rossi – who is fourth in the standings and 42 points adrift of joint championship leaders Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez – will decide if he will ride at Aragon by Wednesday.

The Japanese manufacturer did not field a replacement for Rossi at Misano, but is required to by the regulations for this weekend’s round at Aragon.

Yamaha World Superbike rider Michael van der Mark, fresh from a debut podium for the Japanese marque in Portugal last weekend, is set to make his MotoGP debut as Rossi‘s replacement should he be passed unfit.
