Rea edges closer to world title after dominant Algarve double

Jonathan Rea edged closer to a third World Superbike championship after another dominant win in Portugal, while Chaz Davies crashed out of podium contention.

Starting from ninth as a result of his Saturday win, Rea wasted no time in carving his way through the field, the Kawasaki rider up to sixth at the first corner and into the podium places by the end of the opening lap.

The world championship leader disposed of secondplaced Michael van der Mark into the first corner on the second tour, and snatched the lead away from pole man Leon Camier at Turn 11.

Once clear, Rea immediately opened up a sizable advantage, his gap two seconds as he started his fourth lap.

Behind, Davies – who started eighth – moved into second at the start of lap seven and settled into a lonely race in the runnerup spot.

The battle for third proved frantic, with van der Mark, Euegen Laverty and Marco Melandri fighting for the final podium place.

The Yamaha rider moved into third on lap 11, and was offered some respite as Laverty and Melandri locked horns – the Aprilia rider eventually dropping off the pace.

Van der Mark came under some pressure from Melandri in the closing stages, but not enough to unsettle him.

The Ducati rider looked set to miss out on backtoback podium in Portugal, but a late fall for teammate Davies in second promoted the Italian up to third.

Rea crusied across the line to take his 11th win of the year and extend his championship lead to 120 points, while van der Mark secured a maiden Yamaha podium in second ahead of Melandri.

Laverty crossed the line a distant fourth from Jordi Torres, while Lorenzo Savadori brought the sister Milwaukee RSV4 home in sixth.

Leandro Mercado recovered a seventhplace finish from this weekend after his race one crash, with Ant West, Ayrton Badovini and Takumi Takahashi completing the top 10.

Ondrej Jezek headed Alessandro Andreozzi in 11th, while Xavi Fores crossed the line in 13th after an early fall at Turn 3. Riccardo Russo and Roman Ramos, who both had a coming together at the start, completed the points.

Alex Lowes registered his second DNF of the weekend after a nasty highside on lap eight, while compatriot Leon Camier was forced to park up two laps later with a mechanical issue.

Tom Sykes and Stefan Bradl, who injured his wrist in his race one crash, were nonstarters.
