# Hamilton was ‘sure’ of victory in wet conditions

Lewis Hamilton has suggested that his Singapore Grand Prix triumph was not a huge surprise, as he claims he was ‘sure’ that victory was possible in wet conditions.

Hamilton profited from a dramatic opening lap crash that eliminated his championship rival Sebastian Vettel from pole position, along with his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Hamilton, who started from fifth on the grid, took the lead after the chaos on the opening lap and never relinquished the position. This dominance throughout the race came in spite of Mercedes’ self-confessed struggles during Friday and Saturday.

Hamilton has suggested that the rainfall prior to the race start provided him with confidence that victory was possible.

“I didn’t pray for a miracle, but when it rained I thought ‘this is it – I can win in the rain,’” Hamilton said. “I was so sure that even from fifth we were going to be able to do something. But then of course, everything happened and everyone disappeared.”

“I was really happy; a race with no mistakes. I’ve come here today with the idea of damage limitation thinking that I’m going to come out of here again behind in the championship and now I’m further ahead.”

Hamilton now leads the championship by 28 points – the biggest divide to have separated Hamilton and Vettel throughout the season to date.

The win was Hamilton’s seventh this year and continues a run of from dating back to the end of the summer break in which he has triumphed in all-three races.

“We’re just going to try and continue with the same approach that we’ve had,” Hamilton added when asked about how he and the team will approach the final six rounds of the season.

“This is, I think, our weakest circuit so to come away with a win here and be 102 points clear \[of Ferrari\] in the constructors’ championship – which is definitely our goal – I’m extremely happy.”
