Rossi undergoes successful surgery on leg fracture

Valentino Rossi has undergone successful surgery on a fractured tibia and fibula of his right leg following a dirt bike training accident on Thursday night.

The Italian was riding enduro with his VR46 Academy riders near his home when the accident happened.

He was taken to hospital in Urbino where an examination revealed he had suffered a displaced fracture of the tibia and fibula in his right leg.

Rossi was transferred to the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona for surgery.

The operation, in which a metal pin was fitted, took place between 2am and 3am local time, and was a success.

No time frame for recovery has been offered at present, though it is a certainty he will miss his home race at Misano next weekend.

“The surgery went well,” said Rossi.

“This morning, when I woke up, I felt already good. I would like to thank the staff of the Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona, and in particular Doctor Pascarella who operated on me.

“I’m very sorry for the incident. Now I want to be back on my bike as soon as possible. I will do my best to make it happen.”

Rossi, who is fourth in the standings and 26 points adrift of championship leader Andrea Dovizioso, broke his right leg in 2010 during free practice at Mugello. He returned to action six weeks later.

The Yamaha rider threatened his season 10 days before this year’s Italian Grand Prix, when an incident during a motocross training session left him with soft tissue damage in his abdomen.
