Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes-dominated first practice session at the fastest stop on the Formula 1 circus.

The three-time champion topped the session on a 1m21.537s, which was 0.435s faster than Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel edged team-mate Kimi Raikkonen by just 0.037s into third place. The Red Bull duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, who will both receive hefty grid penalties, were fifth and sixth fastest.

The Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon were seventh and eighth on the timesheets. Once again the duo were heading the speed trap figures.

Stoffel Vandoorne used a tow from his team-mate to set the ninth quickest time with Felipe Massa completing the top 10 just over two seconds adrift of pacesetter Hamilton.

Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz is another driver set to receive a grid penalty, he was 11th quickest after the 90 minutes ahead of Kevin Magnussen and Lance Stroll.

Renault took the unusual choice to run on the medium tyres for a large portion of the session while most others elected to run the two softest tyres this year.
