# Bottas edges Hamilton in second practice at Monza

Valtteri Bottas was quickest in the second practice session ahead of Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton was a close second fastest.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third for the second consecutive session, 0.140s shy of Bottas’ 1m21.406s. Kimi Raikkonen completed the top four.

Max Verstappen was fifth on the timesheets, with Daniel Ricciardo sixth quickest. Both Red Bulls have major grid penalties for the race.

The McLarens of Stoffel Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso, who also has a huge penalty, were seventh and eighth fastest.

Esteban Ocon was ninth with Felipe Massa 10th. The Brazilian was forced to abort his original low-fuel run after dipping two wheels into the gravel on the exit of the second chicane.

An engine blowout prematurely ended Carlos Sainz Jr’s running but he still managed to clock the 11th quickest time. The Renaults had a troubled session, with Nico Hulkenberg only managing 14 laps.

Lance Stroll spun at Ascari and his fastest time was only good enough for 15th, half a second off Williams’ team-mate Massa.

With just minutes remaining, Kevin Magnussen pulled over to the side of track complaining of a ‘broken suspension’.
