Schumacher hails father’s ‘amazing’ title-winning Benetton

Mick Schumacher says the chance to drive his father Michael’s title-winning Benetton from 1994 was an ‘incredible experience’ before the Belgian Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old jumped in the B194, the car that guided his father to the first of his seven world championships, driving a solitary lap to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Schumacher’s first career victory at Spa in 1992.

Schumacher Jr sported a half-and-half helmet of both his own design and Michael’s original 1994 design on the other side.

After completing a lap of honour, Schumacher was greeted by Benetton’s former technical director Pat Symonds and Ross Brawn, who worked alongside Schumacher Snr at Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes.

Asked how the experience felt, the young German replied: “Amazing, it was incredible to be able to drive it.

“It was awesome, we had a bit of understeer to be honest, we need to work a bit on that,” he joked.

Schumacher is currently competing in his first season of Formula 3 after graduating from F4, sitting 11th in the drivers’ standings.

When asked how his Formula 3 car compares to the 23-year-old Benetton, he said: “It’s difficult to compare, it’s two different things.

“To be able to drive the F1 car is just amazing, I’m really honoured to be able to do that here.”

With Schumacher aiming to follow in his father’s footsteps and drive in Formula 1 in the near future, he was asked if he would be competing in the sport within the next few years, responding with a smile: “Hopefully.”
