Gelael handed four FP1 opportunities with Toro Rosso

Formula 2 driver Sean Gelael will be fielded by Toro Rosso during Friday’s FP1 sessions at the Singapore, Malaysia, USA and Mexico Grand Prix weekends during the remainder of 2017.

The 20-year-old earned his first taste of Formula 1 machinery earlier this year when he piloted the STR12 at the post-Bahrain and Hungarian GP tests.

“It is an honour to be driving in Formula 1, starting in Singapore and Malaysia, two venues that are so close to my home country, Indonesia,” Gelael said. “I will use the opportunity to absorb like a sponge everything I can and learn as much as possible.

“I hope I can do a good job for Toro Rosso and provide the team with good data from these important first sessions.”

Gelael first made his debut in GP2 – now rebranded as F2 – back in 2015. His one podium in the series to date came in the 2016 feature race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria where he finished second in mixed conditions.

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost said: “During the tests in Bahrain and Budapest Sean performed very well. Everyone within the team was impressed by his performance, his technical understanding and his commitment.”

Despite his F1 opportunities thus far being provided by Toro Rosso, Gelael is not directly affiliated with the Red Bull young driver programme.
