Zarco tops third practice as Pedrosa misses Q2

Johann Zarco ended a drying third MotoGP practice session for the British Grand Prix top of the timesheets, while Dani Pedrosa missed out on a place in Q2.

Light rain overnight left the Silverstone circuit damp for the start of the Moto3 session, though the track had almost dried out by the time MotoGP’s third session of the weekend got underway.

Tech3 rider Zarco was one of the first to venture out on slicks, and ended up as just one of three riders to actually improve upon their best laps from Friday’s second session.

The Frenchman shot to the top of the third practice standings with a 2m01.734s in the closing stages, moving him up to seventh on the combined times ahead of KTM’s Pol Espargaro, who was eighth fastest in this morning’s session.

Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales went second fastest at the chequered flag ahead of Jonas Folger, who struggled throughout Friday with a severe stomach bug.

Folger’s 2m02.088s in third practice was better than what he managed on Friday, but left him just short of a place directly into the second part of qualifying in 13th.

Andrea Dovizioso headed Danilo Petrucci, the latter of the two not improving on his Friday best down in 17th on the combined timesheets.

Cal Crutchlow, who remains at the top of the combined times heading into qualifying, completed the top six in third practice on his LCR Honda, with Marc Marquez not far off in seventh spot.

Dani Pedrosa, who struggled on Friday with bump absorption, was ninth this morning on the sister Repsol Honda, but his 2m02.602s was not an improvement on his best effort from Friday and he will face Q1 later this afternoon.

Scott Redding completed the top 10 on both the third practice and the combined times, with Valentino Rossi 11th but seventh on the combined standings.

Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro did not turn any laps on his Aprilia as he has been in some discomfort with a rib injury he sustained while karting last week. KTM’s Bradley Smith was the only other improver this morning in 22nd.
