# New Ducati aero fairing already showing potential, says Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo says Ducati’s new aero fairing has delivered ‘a better potential’ than its predecessor, after the Spaniard ran several laps with it in practice for the Czech Grand Prix.

The Ducati-pioneered winglets, first seen in 2015, were banned for this season and factories have been testing various aerodynamic fairings since the winter in a bid to replicate the effect of the devices.

The Italian marque unveiled a radical ‘hammerhead’ design at the Qatar test, but it was soon shelved due to its negative impact on top speed and cornering.

Tested by Pramac’s Danilo Petrucci at Misano during the summer break, the new fairing is a more refined iteration of the original design, and it broke public cover in second practice at Brno.

Only fitted to Lorenzo’s Desmosedici, the Spaniard completed just a handful of laps but could already see its potential.

Due to the lack of dry running on Friday, Lorenzo had no time to do any set-up work with the new fairing attached – the Ducati rider finding rear grip to be lacking thanks to the increase in weight on the front tyre.

“It has been an interesting day,” [the Ducati rider told Crash.net.](https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/1/lorenzo-better-potential-with-new-ducati-fairing)

“We tried the all-new fairing in Qatar and was more negative than positive, so that’s why we decided to put it away.

“Instead this one, I feel, just in five laps, that we have a better potential with this new fairing – at least for me – than we have with the standard.

“Tomorrow I would like to make more kilometres, to try to understand which setting will be the right one, because we didn’t change the setting and for sure this fairing asks for some modifications to try to gain especially more rear grip, because you have more front grip.

“If the weather helps us tomorrow, that’s our main goal, try to have kilometres, try to understand which is the right setting for this fairing and which is the right style to get the best performance.”

The time towards the end of second practice spent on the new fairing meant Lorenzo did not put in a flying lap on fresh rubber.

This left him down in 15th on the timesheets with a best lap of 1m57.637s. Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso ended Friday’s running fastest of all with a 1m56.332s.
