Leclerc tops opening day of post-Hungarian GP test

Current Formula 2 championship leader Charles Leclerc was quickest in the first of two days of testing following Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Leclerc, who was driving Sebastian Vettel’s championship leading Ferrari on Tuesday, set a 1m17.746s on soft tyres to top the session.

The Monegasque driver’s lap would have been good enough for ninth last Saturday, however super-softs were used in Q3 rather than the softs used by Leclerc.

Stoffel Vandoorne, who picked up his maiden point of 2017 on Sunday, was second fastest in the McLaren. The Belgian’s ultra-soft lap was just under a tenth slower than Leclerc’s benchmark.

Valtteri Bottas was third fastest, the Finn was testing his Mercedes on 2018 prototype Pirelli tyres. With 155 laps under his best, Bottas completed more than any other driver.

GP3 championship leader George Russell was driving the WO8, a 1m19.231s was the quickest of his 119 laps completed.

Lance Stroll was testing a heavily upgraded Williams, he was fifth quickest ahead of F3 driver Nikita Mazepin in the Force India.

DTM race winner Lucas Auer drove the Force India in the afternoon session, setting the ninth fastest time.

Nicholas Latifi was driving the 2017 Renault which Robert Kubica will pilot on Wednesday. The Canadian was seventh quickest and drove 54 laps of the Hungaroring.
