Davide Giugliano will race for the Red Bull World Superbike team at the German round of the season at the Lausitzring following a positive test with the Dutch squad.
Giugliano, who raced in WorldSBK for five years prior to this year and amassed 14 podiums, made a switch to the British Superbike Championship with Tyco BMW after he was dropped in favour of Marco Melandri at Ducati.
The Italian found the adaptation to BSB tough, and after injuring his neck early in the season at Brands Hatch – forcing him out of action until July – Giugliano split with the team ahead of the Knockhill round.
Keen for a return to WorldSBK, Giugliano was called up by Honda to replace the Suzuka 8 hours-bound Stefan Bradl – who was eventually forced to miss the event with an inner ear infection – at the Lausitzring two-day test.
Impressing the team with his performance over the two days, Giuglilano was put under serious consideration for a race seat.
At present, the Italian is only set to contest the German round, but could well see out the season should he put on a strong showing on the Fireblade.
“I’m really happy with this opportunity to race at Lausitzring with the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team,” he said.
“After the good test we had there last week, I was hoping to get a chance to compete with them and I’m grateful to have received it.
“I’m back to a good level of form and cannot wait to get started.
“I would like to thank Honda and Ten Kate for making this happen, and I will do my best to make this opportunity worthwhile for all of us.”
Honda only returned to a two-rider effort before the summer break in America, following the tragic death of Nicky Hayden in a cycling accident in May.
MotoAmerica rider Jake Gagne stepped in and impressed, finishing both races inside the points on his WorldSBK debut.
