Daniel Ricciardo topped the opening practice session ahead of Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Ricciardo’s fastest time; a 1m18.486s was 0.234s faster than Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen who was second.
Lewis Hamilton, who sits just one point behind championship leader Sebastian Vettel, was third fastest. Vettel could only manage sixth place in what was a scrappy session littered with minor moments by the German.
Max Verstappen was fourth ahead of Valtteri Bottas. The McLaren duo of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne were an impressive seventh and eighth fastest.
Next came the Renault pair of Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer, who suffered major damage to the front end of his Renault after running over the kerbs at Turn 4 in the dying moments of the session.
Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi took Kevin Magnussen’s Haas for the session but did himself no favours when he stuffed his car into the barriers at Turn 11, bringing out the red flag.
Romain Grosjean spent most of the 90 minutes in the garage to complete a miserable first session for the American team.
Alfonso Celis Jr. took Esteban Ocon’s Force India for the session, he set the 17th fastest time, over a second adrift of regular Sergio Perez who was 12th behind Felipe Massa.
