Lewis Hamilton has lauded Robert Kubica as one of the “quickest drivers I’ve ever raced against,” amid rumours of a possible return to Formula 1 for the one-time grand prix winner.
Kubica will take part in next week’s two-day test following the Hungarian Grand Prix, driving a 2017 car for the first time in his career.
The team insists the test is to evaluate whether or not Kubica would be an option for a 2018 race seat rather than for the rest of 2017.
Hamilton, says he’s keen to see “whether or not he’s going to be racing” in 2018.
“I’m really happy that he’s doing the test, and I’ll have a keen eye on how he’s doing,” said Hamilton.
“I think it will be great if he’s able to [return], if he can, physically.
“[He has] raw, natural talent, which I think as a sport it’s a shame we don’t have here with us.”
Hamilton and Kubica took their maiden victories in consecutive years at Canada and enjoyed a friendly rivalry for the championship for a large portion of the 2008 season.
“Robert’s one of the quickest drivers I’ve ever raced against,” he added.
“If he was still racing today he’d been in contention for a world title, if he’d [already] not won one.
“Not a lot of great, great drivers come through.
“You have some that are much better than the rest, but still not the greatest, and then you have real special drivers like him.”
