Bottas pips Hamilton to top spot in second practice at Silverstone

Valtteri Bottas edged Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the fastest time in the second practice session ahead of the British Grand Prix.

Bottas’ quickest time – a 1m28.496s – was over six tenths faster than his FP1 benchmark, though his FP2 lap was set on the super-soft tyres rather than the soft tyres he used in the morning.

Hamilton’s fastest time was 0.047s shy of Bottas’ lap. Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top three, ahead of Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

The Italian team enjoyed a much more positive session after a difficult start to the weekend in FP1. A spin at Becketts was the only blip in an otherwise successful 90 minutes.

Daniel Ricciardo was over four tenths adrift of Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen who was fifth quickest.

Nico Hulkenberg set the seventh fastest time, a stark contrast to Renault team-mate Jolyon Palmer who struggled for pace once more with only the 18th fastest time and a spin at Brooklands.

Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10. Ocon managed more laps than any other driver with 42 laps of the Silverstone circuit.

The Toro Rosso duo led by Daniil Kvyat was separated by a mere 0.007 seconds in 11th and 12th, with Sergio Perez setting the 13th quickest time.

Kevin Magnussen returned to the cockpit of his Haas for the first time this weekend, just under two-tenths adrift of team-mate Romain Grosjean.

Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein were once again at the foot of the timesheets in 19th and 20th. Unlike most of their rivals, Sauber is waiting till Hungary to bring their next major upgrade.
