Lewis Hamilton has backed team-mate Valtteri Bottas to retain his seat at Mercedes beyond 2017, believing he has earned the right to stay.
Bottas replaced reigning world champion Nico Rosberg at the Brackley-based outfit on a one-year deal after Rosberg retired from the sport just days after clinching the title last year.
The Finn has shown impressive form in his start to life at the team, taking a maiden career victory in Russia, as well as five podium finishes in the opening eight rounds.
Mercedes is yet to make a decision on their driver line-up for 2018 – with many contenders being linked with the three-time constructors’ champions, but Hamilton believes Bottas has done more than enough to secure a new contract for next year.

“I think within the Mercedes family he has earnt his right and place within the Mercedes family for long-term,” the Briton said.
“Mercedes generally I think is the only team in, as far as I am aware in motorsport, that really embraces the individuals that they work with and particularly drivers, you become a part of the family for the rest of you life.
“He’s earnt the right and his place within that, he’s doing a great job within this team and he will continue to grow.
“It’s only his first year within this team, he’s already won a grand prix and has got great points for the team.
“He will go strength to strength and will continue to get stronger, he just needs the opportunity to be able to do so.”
