Dovizioso pleased to win ‘strategic’ race

Andrea Dovizioso is pleased to have taken a win in a race where tyre management and strategy were key.

The Italian took his second consecutive win at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, beating out Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez.

This puts the former 125cc world champion firmly into championship contention. Helped by the fact Maverick Vinales had such a poor showing in Catalunya.

Dovizioso was pleased with the victory, especially as it was unexpected before the race began.

“I’m so happy but also a bit surprised by this win! I had a great feeling before the start because I knew that we could be very competitive, not because we were the fastest out there on the track, but because yesterday we worked well to prepare for the race.

Dovizioso also acknowledged that conditions on the track were difficult, with the hot conditions causing problems for the tyres. The Ducati man was able to manage his tyres effectively though, with his decision eventually giving him the win.

It was a strategic race more than anything else and we were good at interpreting the limits of the track and the tyres. The track was very difficult and all the riders had problems with grip, which dropped off a lot and so we concentrated on administering tyre consumption and on consistency, and this decision paid off.”
