# Alonso slams media’s approach to press conferences

Fernando Alonso has hit out at the media’s approach to press conferences, suggesting that the lack of emphasis on the upcoming race weekend is evidence of one of Formula 1’s fundamental weaknesses.

Alonso returns to the F1 paddock for the Canadian Grand Prix following his first appearance at the annual Indy 500. The Spaniard impressed when Stateside, leading the race at one stage before an engine failure robbed him or the chance to challenge for victory in the closing stages.

Since the event, Alonso has been full of praise for the relaxed atmosphere that the IndyCar series generates at the event. In Thursday’s press conference, he was asked about how F1’s environment can also become more inviting.

“There are definitely things that are difficult to change, difficult to consider if they are good or bad because Formula 1 is the biggest motorsport category in the world for a reason,” Alonso acknowledged.

“An example though is this press conference. There has not been one single question about this race weekend. Not for me, not even for Lewis \[Hamilton\], or even for him \[Jolyon Palmer\].

“Instead, \[we are talking about\] if the future will be ok, if the upgrades will be ok. There is always too much forward thinking. About next year, about September or whenever.”

After spending the ‘Month of May’ battling at one of motorsport’s most competitive spectacles, Alonso poignantly went on to criticise F1’s pecking order predictability.

“There is not enough focus on this race weekend because we more or less know the positions. We can predict the positions on paper and 99% we will match.

“This lack of uncertainty and unpredictable racing generates too much thinking forward and guessing.

“It’s not about being more or less relaxed in the weekend. You come here you focus on the race, prepare with the engineers, prepare the strategy and then you come to the press conference and it’s all about next year and what Zak said or what Toto said.

“So you freeze a little bit as do the emotions that you had about the racing this weekend.”

Alonso’s seismic comments will have unquestionably attracted the attention of F1’s new owners Liberty Media, as they look to evolve the sport and create a more sustainable and popular future.

Given that the Spaniard seems certain to leave McLaren at the end of the season and with most routes to a competitive package in 2018 seemingly barred at present, Alonso’s comments will further fuel the speculation that a move to an alternative series on a full-time basis is on the cards.
