Lewis Hamilton is optimistic that a ‘unique’ set of updates being brought to the Mercedes W08 this weekend will allow him to compete with title rival Sebastian Vettel in Montreal.
Hamilton enters the weekend 25 points adrift of Vettel after the German triumphed in Monaco while the Briton struggled to a sixth place finish following a dire qualifying that culminated in a Q2 exit.
Ferrari’s form combined with the fact that Mercedes’ management has recently labelled their 2017 car as a ‘diva.’ are factors that have made the Scuderia favourites heading into this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Nevertheless, Hamilton is hoping that ‘unique’ updates being brought to the car for this weekend will propel him to challenge for top honours once again.
“We have seen Ferrari are the quickest at the moment so they are favourites,” Hamilton stated. “But we are working hard to rectify the issues we had at the past race.
“I hope we can attack this weekend. We have some unique bits on the cars that could work well this weekend.”
Teams in command of high budgets have, in the past, added new parts specifically designed for use in Montreal given the unusual demands of the circuit.
Mercedes may well have upgrade pieces that appear on the car for just one race in an attempt to overhaul Ferrari’s advantage. Even minor gains could prove pivotal in the battle.
