Massa could stay for 2018 season

Felipe Massa could put off his retirement for another season, if he’s offered the right opportunity.

Massa retired at the end of last year, only to sign a one-year deal with Williams a few months later, replacing former team mate Valtteri Bottas.

Now, he’s open to staying for the 2018 season, in the right circumstances.

“If I have the opportunity to stay in the direction I am or the direction I think is correct for me, I stay,” he told Autosport. “Otherwise, no.

“I was saying the same last season.”

Massa’s strong form since making his return has encouraged his decision. He’s taken four points finishes from six races so far this year, and has regularly out performed rookie team mate Lance Stroll.

The Brazilian believes the new generation of F1 car better suits his driving style and is helping him deliver.

“I’m relaxed, there’s no pressure, and I’m just trying to enjoy it,” he said.

“I was doing the same [last year], but I don’t know. Maybe things change for the better and the way I feel and the way I’m working is quite relaxed.

“I like this car, it’s a lot more close to my driving style.

“I’m happy with the car, the way I’m driving, the way I’m feeling and the work I’m doing for the team.”
