# Dovizioso takes hard fought Mugello victory

Andrea Dovizioso has won the Italian GP at Mugello, taking Ducati’s first ever win at the circuit.

Dovizioso turned a front row start into a hard-fought victory, even after suffering from food poisoning the night before. The Italian took his third ever MotoGP victory, his first in dry conditions.

The start saw home favourite Valentino Rossi take the early lead, followed by teammate Maverick Vinales. The Doctor, suffering from his motocross injuries, was able to stay at the front for the early stages, but obviously suffered as the race went on.

Vinales took over at the front after Jorge Lorenzo had a brief stint in the lead. Vinales looked to gap the rest of the field, however, the sheer pace of the Ducati in a straight line meant he simply couldn’t.

Dovizioso eventually got the better of Vinales and was able to gap the Spaniard slightly. Valentino Rossi was behind them in third until Danilo Petrucci mounted a surprise challenge. The Pramac rider got past his fellow countryman, before passing Maverick Vinales in front of him.

It looked to be Dovizioso’s race, with Petrucci unable to close the gap. Vinales got past Petrucci to take second, but Rossi was unable to do the same to take third.

It was, therefore, Dovizioso who would take the win, in front his home crowd. Maverick Vinales came home second, with Danilo Petrucci third. Valentino Rossi was fourth, being unable to really mount a serious challenge for the victory in the latter parts of the race.

Alvaro Bautista was a surprise fifth, with the Aspar rider having a great race to carve his way through the field. The former 250cc world champion battled with Marc Marquez for the majority of the race, with the Repsol Honda rider coming home sixth. The pair had the pace to challenge the front runners but simply couldn’t cut the gap.

Johann Zarco was seventh, with Jorge Lorenzo coming home eighth. Michelle Pirro was unable to turn his good qualifying into anything, finishing ninth. Andrea Iannone was tenth.

The only fallers were Cal Crutchlow and Dani Pedrosa, who crashed out late on.

This result means Maverick Vinales maintains his championship lead, whilst Dovizioso moves up to second in the standings. The Championship continues next week, with the Catalan GP coming from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
