Horner worried about ‘big challenges’ facing Red Bull

Christian Horner says while Red Bull is beginning to have more of an understanding of the RB13, he is aware of the ‘big challenges’ that lay ahead of them.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit has endured a disappointing start to the season, scoring just three podium finishes with a large deficit to rivals Mercedes and Ferrari.

While recent upgrades have propelled the team closer to the front pack, Horner is wary the next three circuits on the calendar will not play to Red Bull’s strengths.

“We’re understanding the car better, we’re developing the car better and we’re getting performance from the car,” said the Red Bull team principal.

“I’m a little worried about two weeks’ time and four weeks’ time because they’re completely different challenges. The next three circuits for us are actually really tough.”

Montreal, Azerbaijan and Austria are high-downforce circuits and are more reliant on engine power than at other tracks.

With Renault’s much-anticipated power unit upgrade being pushed back to Baku, this presents a potential setback for the former world champions, but Horner is optimistic Red Bull can salvage a strong result.

“They are going to be our biggest challenges of the calendar perhaps bar Monza,” he added.

“If we can perform okay at those next three venues, then with what’s in the pipeline for further in the season, I think the second half of the season can be stronger than the first half.”
