# Vinales satisfied with qualifying result despite wheelspin issue

Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales was left feeling happy with his performance in qualifying, though was left mystified by an issue with wheelspin through Jerez’s left-hand corners.

Vinales came into Saturday’s running with work to do after ending Friday sixth fastest on the combined times. Despite going third quickest in FP3, Vinales still did not look like a genuine challenger for his second pole of the season.

Indeed, in qualifying, Vinales could only manage a 1m38.677s for fourth on the grid. Suffering wheelspin on the left side of the tyre, Vinales ended the session over four tenths off the pace. Despite this, the Spaniard was relatively pleased with how proceedings went.

“I think today was good,” he said.

“We worked quite hard and tried to find a good set-up. Honestly, the right side of the tyre is really good, but when I go onto the left side I suddenly have a lot of wheelspin.

“We have to check it out this night and work really hard for tomorrow’s warm-up.”

Vinales is banking on an increased workload in tomorrow’s 20-minute warm-up session to improve his YZR-M1, as well as decide on his race tyre option. He spent the majority of his time in today’s practice working with the medium tyre, with which he felt fairly comfortable on.

“We still have to decide on the tyre options,” he added.

“We did many laps on the medium tyre and the lap times weren’t so bad, so we have to continue like that.

“Like we did today, we have to work a little bit more than we usually do during the warm-up, so I think tomorrow it’s important to find a good set-up, especially for the left side.”

Team-mate Valentino Rossi has been battling with the cornering issues he encountered in the pre-season and in the opening two races, though feels as if he made a step forward with this today.

The nine-times Spanish Grand Prix winner was disappointed with his seventh position in qualifying and admits he still has work to do for tomorrow’s race, but proved in FP4 that his long run pace is competitive.

“I think today wasn’t so bad, because we worked a lot and improved the feeling with the bike,” said championship leader Rossi.

“My pace is not so bad. We still have to work, especially on the corner entry. I’m not fully happy about the results in the qualifying.

“I will start from the third row, which is always difficult and I think we could have done better, but we’re still working on it. We’re not 100 percent yet, we need to improve.”
