German GP could get new home

The German GP is back next season by popular demand, and will be hosted by the Hockenheimring. In the future, though, a circuit that has never hosted F1 before could hold the race.

F1 CEO Chase Carey is still emphasising the importance of traditional races like the German GP. He indicated that the location of the race might not be limited to Hockenheim or Nurburg in the future.

“It is certainly one of our goals to be represented in the German market,” Carey told news agency DPA. “We are just about to investigate how best to manage this.

“We don’t have any answers yet.

“I have already met with some German representatives and naturally we are talking about the two race tracks that have held the German Grand Prix in the past.

“But we are also looking at other options. Ultimately, however, it is too early to make concrete statements.”

Germany has no shortage of race tracks for F1 to choose from, but many would require significant investment to match the safety standards required to host the GP. With F1 currently so expensive to host, that’s not something many circuits would be willing to do.

The series’ new owner appears committed to making F1 more cost effective for host circuits, though. If that goes ahead, more circuits may be willing to make the investment in the future.

One thing the GP does have on its side is popularity. With a German team currently fighting for its fourth consecutive constructors’ title and drivers doing well at the moment, the market is as important to F1 as ever.
