# Jacobsen edges Sofuoglu to Aragon pole

MV Agusta’s PJ Jacobsen has taken his second Supersport pole position of the season, narrowly edging the returning Kenan Sofuoglu to top spot.

Jacobsen endured a nightmare race in Thailand, with an engine failure forcing him into an early bath. Keen to make up for his woes last time out, the American has been on the pace all weekend, and backed that up with a 1m54.948s for pole.

But an easy Sunday afternoon does not look in prospect for him, as Sofuoglu put in a heroic effort to miss out on top spot by just 0.061s.

The Turkish rider is in action for the first time this year in Aragon having missed the opening two rounds with injury. Admitting yesterday that he still isn’t fully fit, he did assure us that he will be ready for the race regardless.

Completing the front row was Kallio Racing Yamaha’s Sheridan Morais, the South African only 0.090s off the pace. He heads Lorini Honda’s Kyle Smith by two tenths, with Lucas Mahias and Roberto Rolfo completing the second row.

Morais’ team-mate Niki Tuuli was on course for a slot on row two, but a crash late in SP2 saw him tumble to seventh. Hikari Okubo, who also crashed in the closing minutes, will start eighth ahead of CIA Landlords team-mate Robin Mulhauser.

Christian Gamarino headed top European Supersport Cup runner Alessandro Zaccone on the MV in 10th, whilst Britain’s Gino Rea completed the top 12.

Sensationally, starting outside of the top are a number of big names. Thailand winner Federico Caricasulo was two tenths away from a space in SP2, with CIA Honda’s Jules Cluzel a further two tenths adrift in 14th.

Profile Racing’s Luke Stapelford will be relatively pleased with 16th having missed the previous round with mechanical issues. Compatriot Kyle Ryde on the Puccetti Kawasaki will be less so, the Briton coming from 18th tomorrow.

Ant West is back racing this weekend, but his Superpole session got off to the worst possible start. Just four minutes into SP1, his Yamaha engine let go and caught fire, leaving him at the back of the pack. The oil left on track caused a brief stoppage.
