Stroll aiming for a ‘clean’ debut season

A ‘clean’ 2017 season has been highlighted by rookie Lance Stroll as a key factor which will define success in his maiden campaign.

The 18-year-old has faced criticism since being hired by Williams, with many fans citing his father’s heavy investment into his career as being the key factor propelling his rapid rise to the top.

The views of these sceptics were somewhat cemented during the first week of testing, where Stroll endured several off-track excursions. His trip to the barriers on day three of the first test cost Williams an entire day of running as they awaited the arrival of replacement parts.

As a result, Stroll was keen to highlight that keeping errors to a minimum would be key to having a positive 2017 campaign.

When asked what success would look like this season, in Thursday’s FIA Press Conference, the Canadian replied: “I think just a solid year, a clean year, obviously still a lot to learn so I don’t think putting a position or a number would be the right way to approach the whole thing.

“I think we’re just going to take it race by race.”

Stroll is fortunate to have one of the grid’s most experienced competitors on the opposite side of the garage this season. Felipe Massa’s wealth of knowledge will no doubt prove essential for Williams’ fortunes in the development race throughout 2017, and provide a solid reference for Stroll to learn from.

“It’s still going to be a big learning curve for me,” the Canadian added. “There’s still a lot for me to understand about everything but [I need to] listen to the people around me that are there to help me and take it race by race. Looking forward to the whole thing.”
