# Jacobsen tops Supersport time sheets on Friday

MV Agusta’s PJ Jacobsen ends the first day of running ahead of the opening round of the 2017 World Supersport Championship top of the pile despite not improving on his lap time in FP2.

The American rider proved quick during this week’s test at the Phillip Island circuit, and carried that momentum forward into today’s free practice sessions.

Jacobsen put in a best effort of 1m33.087s in this morning’s FP1 to go half a second clear, and while failing to improve in FP2 he still ended the day nearly four tenths up on the rest of the field.

Jules Cluzel, who switched to the CIA Landlords Insurance team for 2017 following a difficult 2016 with MV, was the big mover in an exciting FP2. The French rider leaped up from sixth to second in the closing minutes, finding a gain of nearly eight tenths of a second.

GRT Yamaha’s Federico Caricasulo completed the top three ahead of team-mate Lucas Mahias, whose session was cut 15 minutes short after a crash at the fast left-hander of Stoner Corner. His spill brought out a brief red flag whilst his stricken YZF-R6 was recovered from the gravel.

Roberto Rolfo rounded out the top five on his Team Factory Vamag MV, with Cluzel’s team-mate Hikari Okubo sixth after an impressive run of laps from the Japanese rider late on.

Alex Baldolini guided his Race Department ATK#25 MV to seventh on the combined time sheets, with an all British trio of Gino Rea, Luke Stapleford, who crashed at Turn 7 right at the end of the session, and Kyle Smith completing the list of riders progressing straight through to Superpole 2 tomorrow.

Michael Canducci, on the Puccetti Kawasaki, missed out on the top 10 by just half a tenth. He’ll face some stiff opposition in SP1, with Christian Gamarino, Nacho Calero, Aiden Wagner and Zulfahmi Khairuddin for company, as well as Kyle Ryde and Niki Tuuli.

It was a tough day for the native wildcards. Anthony West, who finished third in last year’s race, only managed two laps thanks to a mechanical issue, whilst compatriot Matt Edwards was taken to the medical centre following a crash at the fast Turn 7.
