# Yamaha duo try new chassis and fairing

The Movistar Yamaha duo of Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi spent the second day of the Sepang test trialling a new chassis and fairing on their way to second and fourth on the time sheets respectively.

With ‘winglets’ banned for the 2017 season, the manufacturers have been hard at work developing replacement solutions to replicate the effect of the wings. With most keeping their cards close to their chest, Yamaha were the first to unveil their radical new fairing with wings encased in it.

Both Rossi and Vinales tested the new fairing back-to-back with the old one, though neither were willing divulge any information following the day’s track action. The pair were also testing a new chassis, aimed at making the bike easier to ride and preserve the rear tyre towards the end of a race distance.

“We have a different frame and it was good, I like it,” said Rossi. “We haven’t decided yet (whether to carry on using it), but the first impression was positive. It is easier to ride the bike. We try to have an easier bike and, especially, during the second half of the race put less stress on the tyres.”

Rossi, fully recovered from a nasty migraine from yesterday, put in a productive day on his YZR-M1, completing 54 laps of the Sepang Circuit as he carried out his evaluation of the new parts. He even had time for a flying lap at the end of the session, going fourth fastest on a 2m00.254s.

“I’m feeling 100% fit again,” the Italian said. “Yesterday when I went to sleep I still had a headache, but today when I woke up I felt better so I was able to put in some good work and at the end it was a good day.

“This morning we lost a lot of time waiting for the conditions to improve, but in the afternoon I could do more that 50 laps. We had some important stuff to try and more or less everything was positive. My pace was quite good and at the end I did a time attack and I’m in fourth position, so top five is OK.”

Vinales, much like yesterday, continued to work on race pace and set-up as settles more and more into his new surroundings. The Spaniard was pleasantly surprised at just how well the M1 is running at this test and is satisfied with his current pace. He ended the day second quickest and just four tenths off of the [best lap set by Suzuki’s Andrea Iannone](https://readmotorsport.com/2017/01/31/iannone-fastest-on-tuesday-as-yamaha-debut-radical-fairing/) with a 1m59.858s.

“Today was a good and I’m so happy because we worked on our race pace and finally at the end, on the race tyre,” last year’s British Grand Prix winner said.

“I tried to do consistent laps, and honestly the lap times were quite fast. I’m surprised that the bike has been working so good and, as the grip increased, we improved each time we went out. As I said, we are focussing on riding on a used tyre so I’m quite happy with second place.”
