# MotoGP to introduce tyre detection system

From 2017, the MotoGP World Championship will implement wireless tyre detection technology in a bid to easily clarify which Michelin slick or wet compound a rider is using at any given time during each session of a race weekend.

A widespread complaint this season has been the difficulty in identifying what tyres a rider has been using. As well as improving the markings on the tyres, Michelin – who returned to the premier class in 2016 as sole tyre supplier –  will use a wireless device fitted onto their tyres that will send information to the ECU. That data will then be fed through to the timing system.

This information will be made available to all teams and riders, allowing them to keep tabs on their rivals and what tyres they are focussing their efforts on during practice. The data will also be made available to broadcasters, giving fans even more information to pour over during a race weekend.

In the same meeting, it was also agreed that the riders progressing through from the first part of qualifying will receive an additional soft rear tyre for the second 15-minute shoot-out. There have be some complaints that riders coming through from QP1 are at a disadvantage because they have used up all but one of their qualifying allocation, thus confining them to a solitary run in QP2 or forcing them to complete their opening gambits on used rubber and put them at a higher risk of crashing.
