Prema announce Ferrari junior duo for 2017 GP2 Season

Prema Racing have revealed that 2016 GP3 champion Charles Leclerc and his GP3 championship rival Antonio Fuoco will head up the Italian team’s GP2 title assault next season.

Prema won both championships in their maiden GP2 season to add to their growing list of success in European Formula 3 and National Formula 4 championships.

Leclerc and Fuoco are both members of the Ferrari young driver academy and both already have F1 experience. They will begin preparation for their 2017 season with the post-season GP2 test in Abu Dhabi this week.

“I am delighted to line-up for the 2017 GP2 Series with Prema and with the Ferrari Driver Academy. I can’t wait to start preparations for this new and exciting challenge,” Leclerc said.

The Monegasque driver recognises the success of the Italian outfit and he knows it’s his best chance at winning the championship and progressing to Formula One in 2018.

“I will continue to give my 100 percent to keep bringing home positive results. I am sure that the support of the reigning champion team, which also finished 1-2 in the 2016 driver standings, will prove crucial.”

Antonio Fuoco raced for the team between 2013-14 and finished the 2014 European Formula Three season as the third highest placed rookie in the Drivers’ Championship, behind only Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon.

“I already raced with Prema in the past and I am aware of the high-performance level of their cars, as confirmed by the outstanding results they got this season,” Fuoco said.

“I think that combining the potential of both the team and the Ferrari Driver Academy, we will definitely get some great satisfactions and continue in our personal and professional growth.”
