Gasly crowned 2016 GP2 champion in Abu Dhabi

Pierre Gasly has secured the 2016 GP2 Series championship with a ninth-place finish in Sunday’s sprint race.

With title rival Antonio Giovinazzi only managing a sixth-place finish, Gasly knew he would be champion.

Alex Lynn stormed to a dominant sprint race victory at the Yas Marina Circuit, finishing ahead of GP2 veteran Johnny Cecotto Jr. and Sergey Sirotkin. Cecotto passed Sirotkin in the latter stages for second. Sirotkin’s third-place finish means beats Raffaele Marciello in the championship to third position behind the two Prema drivers.

Nobuharu Matsushita came home fourth ahead of Norman Nato and Giovinazzi. Artem Markelov was seventh and Mitch Evans rounded out the points.
