Haas to test new brake material, halo in Brazil practice

Haas will test new brake material on their VF-16 car during Friday practice in Brazil in their ongoing quest to eliminate brake problems.

The team have been besotted with a number of retirements in recent rounds, although both cars managed to finish the Mexican Grand Prix.

Esteban Gutierrez suffered brake cooling issues in the last race which caused him to brake earlier into corners.

The team have been using Brembo throughout the season, however, team principal Guenther Steiner said that an unnamed manufacturer will be put under the microscope at the Interlagos track.

“We will conduct a test in either FP1 or FP2 with a different brake manufacturer,” Steiner said.

“It is a test to see how the other material reacts and how the drivers like it and don’t like it. We will try to find out as much as possible in the short time we have available.”

Steiner also confirmed that the team will run the Halo head protection device in the first session to give the FIA more data on the system.

“We are planning to run it with Romain [Grosjean] in FP1 in Brazil. We’ll get his feedback and provide it to the FIA. There needs to be more testing done and we’re happy to contribute.

“Even though the halo won’t be introduced next year, it’s a step toward finding a device that provides protection but also allows drivers to get in and out of the car quickly.

Grosjean will be joined in the first practice session by Haas development driver Charles Leclerc, with Esteban Gutierrez returning to his car for the second session.
