# Renault have two weeks to make Magnussen decision

Renault has two weeks to decide whether they want to keep Kevin Magnussen for the 2017 season.

The Danish driver’s future is uncertain at this point. Technically a free agent, he is hoping Renault will exercise an option to extend his contract with the team.

If Renault hasn’t made a decision by the US Grand Prix, however, Magnussen might start looking elsewhere.

“We’ve had good dialogue, positive conversations,” he told reporters at the Japanese GP. “I know what the situation is, more or less. I’ve given them more time to get things sorted.

“That’s what I wanted to signal, to say I’m willing to wait. I’ve given them two weeks. Hopefully, there will be a decision by those two weeks.”

Renault might be delaying making a decision for commercial reasons. The team are looking to expand their base, and there are drivers available with more financial backing than Magnussen, but the former McLaren driver hopes talent will be considered over money which he thinks puts him at an advantage over the other drivers the team may be considering.

The team is believed to be considering Carlos Sainz Jr. and Esteban Ocon for the 2017 season, as well as Magnussen and his current team mate Jolyon Palmer. Of the three other drivers in the frame, Sainz is the only driver to have scored more points than Magnussen so far this season.
