Renault to continue development focus for last six races

Renault team principal Frederic Vasseur says that the team are going to continue to use the final races of the 2016 season to propel the team forward for the future.

The team come to the Malaysia GP in Sepang on a high after the Singapore Grand Prix represented an improvement for the team.

They earned their first points for almost five months since the Russian Grand Prix with Kevin Magnussen finishing in 10th place.

However, Vasseur is still looking forward beyond the race results that the team may achieve in the remaining six races of the current campaign.

“We must continue to work on improving all areas, however, we have particular focus on those areas of car and team performance which are relevant for next season,” Vasseur said.

During the last race, the team reached another prominent landmark, managing a stop of 2.38 seconds with Kevin Magnussen, and Vasseur says this is just another part of the overall picture that the team are beginning to perfect.

“So for the car, areas like reliability and improving our systems of understanding tyre performance are applicable. Also, for the team, areas like pit stops are crucial and we saw how well we are performing in this area with some exceptional pit stops.

“What we can witness during a race weekend is only the visible part of the iceberg. There is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes from recruitment to restructuring and physical infrastructure improvement and expansion.

Vasseur says that this period of transition is key for bringing the team higher up the grid and that people should not be too worried by some performances they have managed in races in 2016.

“This is a long term project and we have to go through this planning and development phase in order to reap the benefits in the future. What everyone sees on television on a Sunday afternoon is just one aspect of a Formula One team. We are happy that there is strong progress being made.”

Renault remain in ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship after 15 races on seven points.
