# Lowes wins as title battle closes up

Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 rider Sam Lowes has looked in supreme form all weekend, and carried that over to today’s 21-lap intermediate class race to claim a stunning second win of the season.

A hint of the crushing race pace Lowes had in store was glimpsed in free practice yesterday, and it didn’t take long for the British rider to unleash it in the race. He passed Alex Marquez into Turn 9 on the opening lap and began to steadily eke out an advantage over the Spaniard.

Once at the front, Lowes remained unchallenged to the chequered flag to take the win and give hope to his title challenge after closing the gap in the standings to Johann Zarco to 40 points with four races to go.

Marquez held off a late charge from his Marc VDS teammate Franco Morbidelli to take his maiden Moto2 podium in second. Interwetten’s Tom Luthi and Honda Team Asia’s Takaaki Nakagami completed the top five.

Alex Rins put in a steely performance to claim sixth and reduce his gap to Zarco in the standings to just one point. The Spaniard has been out of sorts all weekend, a nasty bout of gastroenteritis hindering him. Despite this, he scythed his way through the field whilst Zarco slipped back, the French rider only eighth across the line.

Lorenzo Baldassarri was seventh, with Simone Corsi and Jonas Folger rounding out the top 10. Xavier Simeon, Mattia Pasini, Sandro Cortese, Hafizh Syahrin and Marcel Schrotter completed the points paying positions.
