# Rossi fastest in opening practice at Misano

Valentino Rossi was fastest in the opening practice session at Misano as many riders struggled to get to grips with the circuit with many falling throughout the session.

At his home event, Rossi was the man to beat in first practice, setting the pace ahead of Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro – who was 0.136s behind Rossi.

British Grand Prix winner Maverick Vinales was third fastest on the Suzuki, 0.262s behind Rossi.

MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez was fourth fastest and was one of several riders who suffered a crash. The Spaniard suffered a low-speed crash at Turn 10 but got going again after the marshals assisted him.

After a run of difficult races, reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo will be hoping for dry conditions this weekend. Lorenzo was fifth fastest, 0.323s off the pace. Dani Pedrosa was sixth fastest on the second Repsol Honda ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

The second factory Ducati of Andrea Iannone crashed heavily at Turn 15 and was subsequently sent to the medical centre for an x-ray examination and other checks. The Italian did not appear again in FP1.

Avintia’s Hector Barbera, LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow and Pramac Ducati’s Scott Redding rounded out the top 10 positions.

As well as Marquez and Iannone, Tito Rabat, Danilo Petrucci and Eugene Laverty all fell throughout the session but did not suffer any injuries.
