Ericsson hit with 10-place grid penalty for Belgian GP

Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson is set to take a 10-place grid penalty for this Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The team had no choice but to replace his internal combustion engine (ICE) and turbocharger for this weekend.

It’s the Swede’s sixth turbocharger of the season, which exceeds the limit of using five versions of each element within his Ferrari power unit, forcing him to drop 10 places from where he qualifies for the Belgium Grand Prix.

This weekend saw the team bring a raft of updates to their front wing and nosecone, marking the Swiss team’s first major upgrades of the season.

Ericsson finished 13th in the opening practice session of the weekend, just under three seconds adrift of the pacesetter, Nico Rosberg.

A place in the second qualifying session may be a target for the upgraded Sauber, but Ericsson is likely to start at the back of the grid for Sunday’s race, regardless of his qualifying efforts.
