# Iannone takes first MotoGP win at the Red Bull Ring

Andrea Iannone today took his first ever win in the MotoGP class at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Iannone, who will be leaving the Ducati team at the end of this season, battled with teammate Andrea Dovizioso throughout but was able to take the win.

The Ducati pairing basically led from start to finish. They took the holeshot after starting first and third on the grid. The Yamaha pairing of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were in pursuit of the Ducati’s in the early part of the race.

However, the Ducati’s, who have been quick all weekend, were able to break away from the Yamaha’s, leaving Dovizioso and Iannone to battle between themselves.

They avoided a potential repeat of their previous exploits, however, as Iannone was able to cleanly pass Dovizioso. The Italian was then able to establish a lead over his teammate that would give him the race win.

Behind them, Jorge Lorenzo was finally able to beat his teammate after a couple of bad weekends for the three-time world champ. Rossi was able to grab fourth, but he will be disappointed he was unable to turn his front row start into a win.

Marquez was fifth, with the Honda rider still recovering from his crash yesterday. He led Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales and Dani Pedrosa, who finished sixth and seventh. Scott Redding was the best of the independent teams, with the Pramac Rider coming home in eighth.

Bradley Smith had a good performance, especially when you consider how badly their season has been going so far. He finished in ninth. His teammate Pol Espargaro was tenth.

Eugene Laverty would have finished eleventh but for a last lap crash that saw his point scoring streak end. Instead, Danilo Petrucci crossed the line in front of the Aspar rider. Michele Pirro was twelfth, with Loris Baz thirteenth.

The result means Ducati have their first win since Casey Stoner won at Phillip Island in 2010. It also see’s Marc Marquez’s championship lead cut slightly. However, this won’t be enough to do any major damage to the Repsol Honda man’s championship campaign.

The MotoGP paddock will return next week as we travel to the Czech Republic and Brno for the Czech GP.
