Having returned to the sport as a manufacturer this season, Renault has embarked on a mission to return to the upper echelons of the sport’s pecking order.
Entering a season with long term goals, as oppose to placing an emphasis on short-term aspirations makes for a situation that is difficult to assess.
Now at the summer break, the team has just a single finish in the points to their name, an entirely underwhelming result despite company CEO Carlos Ghosn managing expectations at the turn of the year.
Renault is at ground zero, the RS16 is a hangover from the severely under-funded Lotus outfit, whom they purchased at the end of 2015. This was to be a year where car development was secondary to simply funding the racing at Enstone, has been a fact placed in plain view.
Rookie Jolyon Palmer has been plunged into this challenging situation for his maiden campaign in the sport, partnering the highly rated Kevin Magnussen, who was saved from certain exile at McLaren.
Two young chargers, a famous brand and a vision for the future, Renault’s 2016 campaign promised to be intriguing and it has, thus far, delivered on this expectation.
