Hulkenberg given grid penalty for tyre error

Nico Hulkenberg has been awarded a one place grid penalty for tomorrow’s German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring.

Hulkenberg was deemed to have used a set of tyres in Q1 that Force India had electronically returned after free practice three.

The mistake was an infringement of rule 24.4e of the sporting regulations which state that teams must hand back two sets of tyres before qualifying, which cannot then be used during the session. Mistakenly, Hulkenberg used a set of these tyres during the first segment of qualifying.

As a result, the stewards have given Hulkenberg a one-place grid penalty which will drop him to eighth place behind Williams’ Valtteri Bottas and ahead of Force India teammate Sergio Perez.
